VOL 6, NO. 13 THE UNIVERSITY OF N. C. AT ASHEVILLE THURSDAY, APRIL 22,-1971 Morrison’s Gets Contract Saga To Leave After Fourth Term After three months of investigations, biddings, and rebiddings, a decision has been tentatively reached on the Food Service Program for next year. According to Dr. Highsmith, it was decided on April 14 to terminate the school’s contract with Saga Foods when the contract expires at the end of fourth term. On April 16, Mr. William Pott, the present business manage^ stated that as of that date, a contract had been written, but had not been signed by the school due to some changes which had to be made. Apparently, Saga Foods will leave the school immediately after the end of fourth term, to be replaced by Morrison’s, Inc. The reasons for deciding to terminate the contract with Saga Foods were many and varied. Southern Association Committee On Campus To Review Self Study Nine members of a reviewing committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools are scheduled to visit the UNC-A campus April 21-24. The purpose of the committee is not to give the campus accreditation but to make a report back to the Southern Association on the validity of the Self Studyrecently completed by UNC-A. Every ten years, schools are called on to make a detailed and critical self-study “in order to improve educational efficiency.” UNC-A just finished itssecond Self-Study last term under the guidance of Mr. Richard Reed, 3elf-Study Steering Committee Chairman. The members of the visiting Committee are: Dr. Turner Allen, Chairman of the Committee, Dean of the University, Florence State University; Dr. Walter S. Martin, President of Valdosta State College; Dr. C. Lee Hartwell, Academic Dean of LaGrange College; Dr. J. H. Willis, (continued on page 3) according to Dr. Highsmith. The decision was reached after consulting with dormitory and commuter students, some faculty, and members of the Administration who regularly ate at the cafeteria. Generally however, the complaints fell into two categories: dis satisfaction with the former lack in quality, and economic considerations. Chancellor Highsmith noted that the major reason for deciding to sign the contract with Morrison’s was the fact that the students will get more for their money. According to Mr. Pott, Morrison’s submitted the best financial offer of the companies involved in the bidding. “Their plan was the most favorable for both the school and the students. We have operated at a loss under Saga’s contract, and we can no longer afford to do SO. Presently the dormitory students pay $300.00 per semester for 14 meals per week under the Saga contract. Morrison’s offers 21 meals a week at no change in cost to the student. The students are supposed to receive unlimited, but controlled, portioned seconds on all itmes excpet for steaks under the Morrison’s plan. In addition, the contract with Morrison’s specifies that beef and veal must be USDA Grade (continued on page 3) Springsteen, Crimmins, Said Continue Foreign Affairs Forum Mr. Springsteen On Monday April 26, 8 p.m. the second pseaker in a series of four Foreign Affairs Forum speakers will address a UNC-A audience. Monday, May 10, 8 p.m. Dr. Abdul Aziz Said, professor of International Relations at the school of International Service, American University, and a native of Syria, will speak on the Middle East. Tuesday, April 13, the Judicial Board met to review again the case of Mike Zimmer’s eligibility for candidacy for the office of SGA Vice President. Zimmer’s election had been contested by the other Vice Presidential candidates, David Anders and Chuck Bennett on the grounds that though he had been issued an SGA Activity Card, he was not lelisible for office because the SGA had not received payment for the card, i Anders and Bennett contested the election on grounds established by Article Eleven, Section Two of the Constitution, which states that “All members of the S.G.A. shall pay an activity fee ... ” Zimmer had countered the challenge on the grounds established by Article One of the Constitution, which states that “Every person enrolled as a student at the University and who holds a student activity card sliall be a member of the SGA.” The ehgibility clause for holding the office of SGA Vice President is located in Article Four, Section Three, Paragraph Two, which states that “The Vice President must be either a Junior or a Senior at the time he takes office and must have been a full time student at UNC-A immediately prior to his taking office for four consecutive terms.” Zimmer claimed that he fulfilled all the requirements as stipulated by Articles One and Four. The Judicial Board upheld his claim in a unanimous decision^ which states that “Mr. Zimmer validly holds an SGA Activity Card . .. ’’Though no dissenting or concurring opinions were registered, the Judicial Board did note that Mr. Zimmer “ .. . remains in debt to the SGA.” Implicit in the Judicial Board’s decision is that Mike Zimmer is the Vice-President elect of the SGA. Also implicit is the assertion that Mike Zimmer should pay for four terms’ use of an activity card. The Judicial Board did not rule explicitly on these points. The Judicial Board recommended the formation of a committee to study and ammend the UNC-A Student Government Constitution.
